We are pleased to present a comprehensive report on the National Librarians' Day celebration held at the Central Library of Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence on August 12, 2023. The event was organized to honour the 132nd birth anniversary of Padmashri Dr. Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan and to acknowledge the significant contributions of librarians in fostering a culture of learning, research, and knowledge dissemination. This day offers an opportunity to recognize the vital role librarians play in supporting education and research.
The celebration began with an inaugural ceremony, including the garlanding of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan's portrait and the lighting of the auspicious lamp. The ceremony was presided over by Mrs. Roopa Murthy, the President of the program, along with esteemed guests Mrs. Sivasankari R, the Finance Officer of SSSUHE, and Ass Prof. Yogesh Baba from the Department of Economics, SSSUHE.
Dr. Ambaraya B.M., Assistant Librarian of the Central Library of SSSUHE and the event's convener, introduced Dr. S.R. Ranganathan as the "Father of Indian Library Science" and highlighted his contributions to transforming library management in India. He emphasized Dr. Ranganathan's pioneering efforts in establishing library infrastructure after India's independence and his development of the Colon’s Classification, a significant addition to library classification systems worldwide. Dr. Ambaraya also elaborated on Dr. Ranganathan's Five Laws of Library Science.
Assistant Professor Yogesh Baba emphasized the crucial role of libraries in the field of Economics, stressing their role in providing essential statistical data for accurate predictions and assessments.
In her presidential remarks, Mrs. Roopa Murthy delivered a thought-provoking keynote address on the value of libraries in students' lives, especially in higher education. She discussed the evolving role of libraries in the digital era and the challenges and opportunities posed by technology.
Cultural Performances: The event featured a creative and culturally diverse quiz program, showcasing the intellectual prowess of selected university students from the Kalaburagi campus.
Participation: The National Librarians' Day celebration was a resounding success, facilitating knowledge exchange, discussions on emerging library trends, and recognition of librarians' tireless efforts in promoting education and research. The event reaffirmed the university's commitment to nurturing an environment that values and supports libraries' essential role in academic growth.
