Introduction
The Performing Arts Department of the Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence embarked on a significant journey to participate in the Marghazhi Mahotsav 2024, a prestigious festival celebrating classical arts in Chennai. Led by our esteemed director, Dr. Revathi Ramachandran, this visit showcased the talent of our students and provided invaluable learning experiences in the realm of performing arts.
Journey Overview
The contingent departed for Chennai on December 24, 2024, comprising a diverse group of students specializing in Carnatic music, Hindustani music, and Bharatanatyam dance. The visit coincided with the Marghazhi season, renowned for its vibrant cultural presentations and congregation of finest practitioners of classical arts.
Travel and Accommodation
The students were accommodated in separate locations in Mylapore (boys) and another area (girls), ensuring a comfortable and secure stay for all.
Experiential Learning
Throughout the week, our students performed at several esteemed venues, including Hamsadhwani Sabha, Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, and Indian Fine Arts Hall. These performances showcased their hard-earned skills and cultural heritage, receiving enthusiasm and admiration from the audience. In addition to performing, students attended masterclasses and performances by leading artists, gaining insights into advanced techniques, performance nuances, and rich traditions of classical music and dance.
Reflection on Growth and Aspiration
This journey served as a critical reflection point for our students. They gained an understanding of the high standards required to become proficient performing artists and the commitment necessary to excel in this competitive field. The exposure to professional environments ignited their aspirations, encouraging them to strive harder to perfect their art forms and embody the values taught by Swami.
Performances
The Performing Arts Department presented several performances, including:
- Thematic Abhang Concerts at Hamsadhwani Sabha, Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, and Indian Fine Arts Hall
- Bharatanatyam dance recitals, including "Devi Mangalam" at Bapal Bhavan and Ethiraj Kalyana Mandapam
Professors' Performances
Professors from the department also performed at various venues, including:
- Vid. Abhiram Bode at Nadasudha Ganapathy Sachidananda Ashram, Neelakanta Sivan Cultural Academy, and Ragasudha Hall

Return Journey
The music students returned on December 30, 2024, while the dance students returned on December 31, 2024, reaching the campus on January 1, 2025.
