INDIA’S FIRST RURAL-FOCUSED MEDICAL COLLEGE FULL ACADEMIC & RESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE RURAL SOCIO-ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED

The Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (SMSIMSR) which was inaugurated by the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi ji, on 25th March 2023, is India’s first and only-of-its-kind rural-focused medical college “in the Rural, by the Rural, for the Rural”, which has been established with the sole objective of making quality medical education accessible for aspirants from socio-economically weaker sections in rural India, who score well in the NEET exams but cannot afford the exorbitant costs of a regular chargeable MBBS course in other institutions.

With rural India, where 65% - 70% of the population resides, having access to barely 20% of the nation’s healthcare infrastructure and an alarming doctor-patient ratio of 1:11,000 or above (less than one tenth of the prescribed WHO standard 1:1000), quality healthcare institutions & qualified healthcare professionals are an absolute scarcity and a critical necessity in rural India. The Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences & Research with attached 360-bed teaching hospital providing free-of-charge secondary and tertiary care medical services in the rural neighbourhood of Chikkaballapura district, Karnataka, serves as the panacea for the poor medical infrastructure and dearth of qualified medical professionals typical of under-developed rural geographies.

The Institution’s uniquely holistic MBBS course is focused not only on medical education per se, but equally on the underlying values-based & selfless service-minded dedication to making quality healthcare available and accessible in hitherto underserved and un-served rural geographies of the country. The Institution offers scholarships covering all the academic & residential costs (Faculty Costs, Books, Reference & Teaching Material, Instruments, Labs & Equipment Maintenance, Boarding & Personal Expenses) for the underprivileged and socio-economically disadvantaged NEET qualified medical aspirants from rural India. For the NEET qualified aspirants hailing from socio-economically privileged backgrounds who nevertheless would like to pursue holistic medical education at SMSIMSR, and dedicate themselves to serving the rural un-served & underserved for a minimum period equivalent to their course duration, the course is chargeable.

As a part of its School of Healthcare Sciences, the University also offers Professional courses in BSc Nursing & Allied Health Sciences (AHS) & BSc Mental Health, for young girls and boys from the local rural population, thus enabling their Employment and Sustainable Livelihoods, and simultaneously building capacity & capability in the frail medical ecosystem that prevails in rural India.
